New layouts to have two water lines

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, JUNE 11. The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) will lay separate lines for potable and non-potable water in all new layouts being developed by the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) and the Karnataka Housing Board (KHB).

The BWSSB Chairman, M.N. Vidyashankar, announced this at a meeting with the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) Council members on Friday.

He told the members that a decision to lay two lines in all new layouts had been taken by the board recently.

This step would ensure that potable water was used only for drinking and non-potable for other purposes.

The BWSSB had already commissioned six sewage treatment plants (STPs) in the city and eight intermediate sewage pumping stations would be ready soon.

"We will encourage the use of recycled water and this will help us in the long run. There will not be water shortage in the city in the next few years," Mr. Vidyashankar said.

Following complaints from corporators about delay in the laying of water and sanitary lines in the newly-added wards, the Mayor, P.R. Ramesh, had asked the BWSSB Chairman to come and listen to the members.

The BMP had entrusted the Rs. 150-crore project to lay water and sanitary lines in new wards to the BWSSB last year and the board had taken up work in packages.

The corporators are upset because the board had failed to keep up its March 2004 deadline to complete the work.

The Mayor told presspersons after the meeting that the BWSSB chairman had promised to complete all the packages by August.

"The (BWSSB) Chairman has told us that work was delayed because of technical problems. He has promised to meet batches of four or five corporators every day in his chambers from Wednesday to discuss BWSSB-related problems in their ward," the Mayor said and added that this would help the corporators in getting works in their wards executed at the earliest.

Earlier, members cutting party lines, reportedly urged Mr. Vidyashankar not to get the public taps and mini water schemes disconnected.

The board had announced that the mini water schemes in the city would be disconnected, as it could not meet the increasing power charges.

The members reportedly asked the BWSSB Chairman to request the Bangalore Electric Supply Company (BESCOM) to supply subsidised power for the project.
