Trulli, Alonso top practice
MONTREAL,
JUNE 12.
Renault drivers Jarno Trulli and Fernando Alonso stole the spotlight from Michael Schumacher on Saturday in the final free practice before qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix.
After six-time Montreal winner Michael Schumacher set the early pace with a lap of 1 minute, 13.420 seconds on the 4.4-kilometer (2.7-mile) Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Alonso outdid the German driver with a lap of 1:12.901 and his teammate did even better, turning a lap of 1:12.833. In the closing seconds, the Italian driver lowered that time to a dazzling 1:12.629.
Trulli's quick lap was considerably faster than the qualifying record of 1:12.836, set in 2002 by Juan Pablo Montoya in his Williams. That was not official, though, since track records can be set only in qualifying and the race. Several other drivers turned in fast laps late in the second of two 45-minute sessions Saturday morning.
