PONDICHERRY, JUNE 12. The Pondicherry Pradesh Congress Committee president and Rajya Sabha MP, V. Narayanasamy, said today that the Union Textiles Minister, S. Waghela, had assured him that the National Textiles Corporation's move to close the Swadeshi mill would be kept in abeyance. He returned from Delhi after holding discussions with the Minister yesterday. Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Narayanasamy said he had requested the Minister to visit the mill here to assess the potential for modernising it. He had also urged the Union Health and Family Welfare Minister, R. Anbumani, for 15 additional seats in the MBBS course at JIPMER here. These seats should be made available exclusively for Pondicherry students. Mr. Narayanasamy said he had called upon the Railways Minister, Laloo Prasad Yadav, to ensure the setting up of a new rail link between Pondicherry, Tindivanam and Cuddalore. A team comprising himself, the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, the Deputy Speaker, A.V. Subramanian, the Education Minister, K. Lakshminarayanan, had met the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, seeking his intervention for the immediate release of Cauvery water. Mr. Rangasamy also presented a memorandum to the Prime Minister, highlighting the problems of Karaikal farmers.
