Search on for polio-hit child

SRIKAKULAM (AP) JUNE 12. A search is on to locate a polio-affected, 14-month-old boy of this district. The case was reported from Palasa, near Nuvvalarevu, a fishermen's village. The boy's parents are said to be in Chennai, sources said here yesterday. The fishermen migrate in search of work but keep visiting the village on festive occasions. The case was reported by a doctor in a watch kept for acute flaccid paralysis as well as polio cases. Stool samples were sent to Chennai. The boy was immunised for polio in campaigns conducted in the district. Further examination would reveal what strains caused polio.

Malaysian trade team in city

CHENNAI JUNE 12. S.A. Dass, Trade Commissioner, Malaysian Trade Commission, called on R. Veeramani, president, Southern India Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI), and discussed promotion of economic relations.

It was felt that Malaysia should take advantage of the incentives offered by India for private investments in projects, particularly of infrastructure.

The delegates also discussed promotion of two-way tourism between the two countries and including Bangkok in the trip. Indian businessmen visiting Malaysia should be assisted in setting up joint ventures in agro-based products, biotechnology and information technology. The necessity to promote business through exchange of trade delegations between both countries was emphasised, according to a SICCI release.

Dalit children changing school

COIMBATORE JUNE 12. A number of Dalit children studying in the government high school at Kalapatti town panchayat, near here, (which witnessed clashes between two communities on May 16) have shifted to other institutions in the vicinity. When contacted, the Collector, S. Kosalaraman, said the shifting was only for change of residence. "It is definitely not for reasons of insecurity as alleged." However, the district administration deputed officials to instil confidence in Dalits.

Copies of Tamil daily burnt

VELLORE JUNE 12. Four persons, including Rajasekharan, the Tirupattur Pattali Makkal Katchi councillor were arrested for burning copies of the Tamil daily, Dinamalar on Saturday.

According to police, about 500 copies of the daily published and printed here, which were dumped by the transport operator at the Tirupattur bus stand at about 4.30 a.m. were burnt by miscreants even before the news agent could come and collect the newspapers for distribution. The incident was allegedly in protest against the publication of "anti-PMK news" in the various editions of the daily. Mr. Rajasekharan, Ezhumalai, Mudiyappan and Shankar, all PMK activists have been remanded to judicial custody.

Toll for vehicles

CHENNAI JUNE 12. Toll will be levied on vehicles entering the Kodaikanal municipal area in Dindigul district for a year from June 15.

The toll will be levied on vehicles passing through the Dindigul-Kodaikanal road, the Palani-Kodaikanal road and the Kochi-Kodaikanal road at Silver Cascade and next to Pillar Rocks in between Pillar Rocks and Moyar Point in Kodaikanal, according to a gazette extraordinary notification. The toll is not applicable to non-commercial motor vehicles owned by residents of Kodaikanal municipal area.

The toll rates are for buses Rs. 75, tourist buses Rs. 100, lorries (heavy vehicles) Rs. 50, tourist cars, taxis (including Sumo, Qualis, Trax) Rs. 30, cars or jeeps Rs. 20, maxi cabs (van, mini lorry, tractor) Rs. 50 and three-wheelers and two-wheelers Rs. 10.

Protest by transport staff

DINDIGUL JUNE 12. Drivers and conductors of the TNTSC (Madurai Division-IV) Limited today staged a demonstration by parking buses across main roads around the Kamarajar Central bus stand here demanding the arrest of a lawyer for allegedly attacking a conductor.

The corporation staff resorted to agitation after peace talks led by the Revenue Divisional Officer, Baskaran, failed. Police, trade union members and the public took part in the meeting. Police said the Corporation staff agreed to settle the issue amicably. But the lawyers' association representatives refused to accept the offer and demanded the arrest of the conductor. They decided to take up the matter to court. Later, the TNTSC general manager, K. Chandrasekaran, rushed to the spot and advised the staff to withdraw the agitation. Traffic was disrupted for 45 minutes. A section of lawyers urged the police to take action against the corporation staff for attempting to assault them during peace talks. Lawyer Nagendran and conductor Padmanaban quarrelled with each other recently. Cases were filed against them.

Fatally run over

KARUR JUNE 12. A 50-year-old man was crushed to death at Keezha Mettupudur near here on Friday. The police said M. Lakshmanan, of Manikkapuram, was travelling with his friend in a motorbike when a private bus hit his vehicle at Keezha Mettupudur. Lakshmanan died on the spot. The police have launched a search for the driver.

Farmer hacked to death

TIRUCHI JUNE 12 . A farmer, Ulakkaiyan alias Arockiyaraj (75) of Kalpalayathanpatti near Manapparai, was hacked to death by a youth of the same village, following a land dispute. The youth also attacked a couple, leaving them seriously injured.

The police said Xavier Dhanraj (27), son of Rajendran, attacked Ulakkaiyan with an aruval after a wordy duel over the raising of a fence and sharing of water from a common well this morning. Ulakkaiyan died on the spot. Later, Xavier Dhanraj attacked Thomas William and his wife, Mary, also because of a land dispute. Both were admitted to the Manapparai Government Hospital.

Electricity bills computerised

KARAIKAL JUNE 12 . The monthly electricity bills for all categories of consumers in the southern part of Karaikal from the southern side of Tirunallar road to NSC Bose Road/Beach Road have been computerised and new bills will be issued to 5,000 consumers from June 14.

According to a communication from the Executive Engineer-V of the Electricity Department of the Pondicherry Government here, arrangements have been made by the Electricity Department to enable the consumers in the area to pay bills in their respective collection centres.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI JUNE 12. The level in the Mettur dam stood at 39.01 feet today. The inflow was 1, 022 cusecs, and the discharge 50 cusecs.

Rally

Dharmapuri June 12. Students of the National Child Labour Project (NCLP) schools in association with regular students of other schools undertook a rally to create awareness among the public about the ill effects of child labour as well as to highlight the dangers of children working in hazardous and non-hazardous occupations. The rally started at the Municipal Girls Higher Secondary School, after the Collector, Ashish Vachhani, flagged it off.

Mr. Ashish Vachhani and the Superintendent of Police, S.Rajendran took part in the rally and pasted Anti-Child Labour Day labels on vehicles, shops and other business establishments. The students were divided into five groups and carried on their campaign through the important lanes and main thoroughfares of the town. The Joint Director of Health, B.T.Subramaniam, and other officials took part.

Road blockade

Dharmapuri June 12. Villagers of Andiyur in Harur taluk resorted to a road blockade condemning the bad condition of roads, which had become unmotorable and was not re-laid for the past two years.

The villagers claimed that though they had made repeated representations to the authorities no action had yet been taken. The villagers claimed that the roads were in such a dilapidated condition that pits had developed in it forcing rainwater to collect. After assurances from the police and officials the villagers withdrew their blockade. As a result of the road blockade traffic was disrupted for nearly an hour on Dharmapuri-Harur road.

Body found

Krishnagiri June 12. The body of an unidentified man, around 30, with signs of mutilation was found at Melumalai here on Friday. Police said the body had been sent for post-mortem.

De-addiction Day

ERODE JUNE 12. International De-addiction Day would be conducted in the district on June 26, said the Collector, D. Karthikeyan last evening when he was conducting a preliminary meeting with the district officials at the Collectorate for the conduct of the meeting.

Rain continues

Nagercoil June 12. Heavy rain continued to lash various parts of the district for the second day today.

Special exam for students

Tirunelveli June 12. The Manonmaniam Sundaranar University will conduct a special examination for the students who have failed in the General Awareness (NGA6) paper in April 2004.

According to the Controller of Examinations, P. Gomathinayagam, a significant number of students failed in the General Awareness paper though they passed in all other subjects, which hampered their higher studies. The Vice-Chancellor, K. Chockalingam, ordered to conduct the examination for these students, who must send their applications along with the examination fee through the colleges, where they studied last.

The applications should reach the Controller of Examinations on or before June 22, as the special examinations would be held at select centres on June 26, he said.

Cases against 50 persons

Ramanathapuram June 12. The police today registered cases against 50 persons on charges of disturbing traffic at Thiruvadanai near here.

According to the police, the agitators staged a road blockade near the bus stand, seeking immediate water supply. Officials pacified the agitators. The traffic was disturbed for half an hour.

Arrangements for certificates

THENI June 12. The Collector, Sunil Paliwal, said the district administration had made elaborate arrangements for issuing residential proof, community, and income certificates to school and college students to enable them to join higher classes.

In a release here yesterday, he said a Deputy Tahsildar and sufficient subordinate staff had been deputed specially for this purpose in all five taluk offices.

Issuance of certificates began on June 1. He appealed to the students to submit application forms and obtain the certificates immediately. Certificates would be issued to students on the day of submission of application. Students or their parents could complaint, if any, either to the Collector or his Personal Assistant (General) or contact 254956 (04546).

Temporary train halt at Valliyur

MADURAI JUNE 12. The Southern Railway has provided a temporary stoppage at Valliyur for the Train No.6123 Chennai Egmore-Tiruvananthapuram Ananthapuri Express up to August 31.

According to a release, the train will leave Valliyur at 8.25 a.m.

Top scorers honoured

MADURAI JUNE 12. The Canara Bank recently honoured top scorers of the Secondary School Leaving Certificate Examinations from the Arulmigu Meenakshi Sundareswarar Girls' Higher Secondary School here.

Students who had scored centum in different subjects were also felicitated.

G. Thothathiri, Manager (Ramanathapuram branch), P. Baskaran, Joint Commissioner/Executive Officer, Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, were among those who participated in the function.
