MANGALORE,
JUNE 12.
The second place went to those from Sharada Vidyalaya School. Shyam and Kaushik, the winners from Chinmaya Vidyalaya, scored 55 points, five ahead of first runners-up, Meenakshi Sundaram and Harshavardhan.
Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Sharada Vidyalaya, Canara High School and St. Aloysius High School qualified for the final round after the preliminary written round.
The written round saw the participation of 46 students from 15 schools around the city.
The chief guests on the occasion were the Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University, B. Hanumaiah; the Dean of Aloysius Institute of Computer Sciences, Denzil Lobo; and the Deputy General Manager, Public Affairs Department, Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt Ltd., Shripad Bhat.
"It is very important for us to accept that we ourselves are responsible for spoiling our environment. This awareness will help us deal with the problem of polluting our planet,'' said Mr. Lobo.
Mr. Bhat said his company wanted to inculcate an environment-friendly attitude in children and was hence conducting several such programmes. The company had been conducting drawing and essay competitions based on environment for schoolchildren. "We at Toyota Kirloskar believe that Earth is not a gift from our parents, but something that we have borrowed from our children and future generations,'' he added.
