MANGALORE, JUNE 12. The Dakshina Kannada unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), while urging the State Government to hand over the investigation of the rice racket, to the Central Bureau of India (CBI), has decided to hold a demonstration in this connection in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner here on Monday. A press release from K.R. Shriyan, secretary of unit, here on Saturday said the racket had exposed deliberate diversion of rice stocks meant for the food-for-work programme and its denial for the poor. He said a thorough probe by the CBI would help identify those involved in the racket, and the guilty, irrespective of their stature or connections, should not be spared at any cost. The district unit of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), in a separate release, urged for strict punishment to those reportedly involved in the racket. The general secretary of the unit, D.B. Salian, stated there was every possibility of influential people being directly involved in this major racket.
