dated June 14, 1954: French Govt. falls

The French Prime Minister, Mr. Joseph Laniel tendered the resignation of his Government to President Rene Coty after he had lost the vote of confidence in the National Assembly in Paris on June 12. Mr. Rene Coty said he would decide on the resignation one way or the other within the next 48 hours. Observers, however, said he probably would accept the resignation. If he does, the Far East Conference at Geneva will almost certainly be suspended because of the recall of the French Foreign Minister, M. Georges Bidault. Even if the President refuses to accept the resignation, it is expected that Gaullist and Radical Ministers will resign personally, bringing the Government's inevitable collapse.
