dated June 14, 1954: Yanam freed

The citizens of Yanam, a French settlement, liberated themselves on June 12 amidst scenes of enthusiasm, and declared their independence. For some time in the past, repression, arson, looting, assaults on peaceful citizens had driven them to the verge of impatience. The previous night a number of hired goondas looted the houses of pro-mergerites and assaulted the families. In addition they opened fire on a refugee camp in Indian territory. The Indian police had to return the fire in self-defence. The citizens of Yanam then came to the refugee camp in a crowd and requested the refugee leaders to enter Yanam and take over the administration to restore law and order. Volunteers from the neighbouring villages and refugees of Yanam led by their leaders entered Yanam and were heartily greeted by the residents.
