Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, JUNE 13. The Pondicherry Pattali Makkal Katchi MP, M. Ramadoss, has requested the Railway Minister, Laloo Prasad Yadav, to ensure electrification of the Villupuram-Pondicherry broad gauge line. In his letter, Mr. Ramadoss said the Chennai-Villupuram line was electrified but the 38-km track to Pondicherry was not done. He said the Pondicherry administration had agreed to share 50 per cent of the Rs. 9 crore-investment. He also urged the Railway Ministry to ensure that the name board at the local railway station bore `Puduchery', instead of `Pondicherry'. In a letter to the Minister of State for Railways, R. Velu, recently, Mr. Ramadass said `Puducherry' should also be printed on tickets. The station was named `Puduchery', when it was established by the then French administration, decades ago. Though the name board atop the station's portico bore `Puduchery', the one on the platform displayed `Pondicherry'.
