By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, JUNE 13. The Pondicherry Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, said here on Saturday that the State Government was awaiting the Centre's approval for starting a Postgraduate Medical Institute for the benefit of medical students in the Union Territory. Inaugurating the Pondicherry support (counselling) centre (the third such centre in the country) of the Singapore-based Louis Preston School of Business here, Mr. Rangasamy said the Union Territory had been making phenomenal progress in education and tourism. He also stressed the need for a sprawling campus with at least 500 rooms to accommodate tourists visiting Pondicherry during weekends. Mr. Rangasamy said the B.Sc nursing course offered here had helped students take up jobs abroad. He said his government would welcome entrepreneurs but permission would not be given for chemical and iron and steel industries. The Education and Tourism Minister, K. Lakshminarayanan, who earlier released a VCD of the Preston School of Business, said the administration would offer a maximum of Rs 20 lakhs as subsidy to businessmen investing in hotels. A five per cent subsidy toward the interest component for loans raised would also be available. He said opening of the facility for students to pursue higher studies in hotel and hospitality, travel and tourism and business management through the Singapore-based institution was a welcome development. The tourism sector had been generating substantial revenue, he pointed out. Peter Hopper, the Director of Studies of the School, Mike Bashie, president of the institution, R.A. Balaguru, vice-president, P. Mathew Samuel, Managing Director of Tourism and Transport Development Corporation of Pondicherry, and Ayyakannu, Chief Education officer of the IT school, also spoke at the function.
