Stalling of Parliament unfortunate: Atwal

AMRITSAR, JUNE 13. Terming as ``unfortunate'' the stalling of Parliamentary proceedings over the issue of "tainted Ministers," the newly elected Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker, Charanjit Singh Atwal, today said that both the ruling and Opposition parties should sit together to break the deadlock.

Mr. Atwal told reporters on his visit to the holy city after being elected as the Deputy Speaker that ``persons with criminal background pose a big threat to our democracy and such politicians must be left out to keep and maintain the sanctity of the House.''

It was the paramount duty of political parties to field and send only persons with a good image to the august House.

Stating that the efficacy of any democracy depended on the vibrancy of the legislature, he said such a democratic spirit along with an inspiring solidarity would pave the way for smooth functioning of the House.

Accompanied by his son, Inder Iqbal Singh, an MLA, Mr. Atwal paid obeisance at the Golden Temple and Durgiana Temple and laid floral wreaths at the Flame of Liberty at the Jallianwala Bagh here.

He was given a guard of honour by a contingent of the Punjab Police on his arrival. — PTI
