Trade unions to press for V-C's recall

By Our Special Correspondent

VISAKHAPATNAM, JUNE 13. Trade unions and students' organisations have decided to organise a seminar on June 20 and press for the recall of its Vice-Chancellor, Y.C. Simhadri, for his "anti-student and anti-worker policies."

Announcing this at a media conference here on Sunday, the general secretary of CITU city committee, A. Ajay Sarma, said that the Visakhapatnam MP, and the legislators of Visakhapatnam-I, Visakhapatnam-II, Pendurthi, and S. Kota, would be invited for the meet to exert pressure on the Government to recall the Vice-Chancellor. Already, the students and employees who were vexed with his functioning have ensured that the previous TDP Government which supported him, was routed. The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, had also made a promise during the election campaign to the people and AU employees that action would be taken against the Vice-Chancellor once the Congress came to power.

The seminar would be followed by a dharna in front of the Collectorate on June 25. "A delegation of trade union leaders would meet the Chief Minister during the Assembly session and on July 1 when the university colleges reopen, the students and employees would launch a campaign and intensify the agitation to press for V-C's recall," he said.

Speaking on the occasion, State INTUC general secretary, Mohan Kumar, said it was a pity that Prof. Simhadri believes that trade unions should not interfere in the university affairs. But what he has failed to understand is that the students are children of working class and the poor were denied admissions in the university and its hostels.

"He banned trade unions on the campus and either transferred or sacked employees. He resorted to removal of flags and flag posts at union offices and denied the fundamental rights to the students and staff. This is not expected of an academician. As for the discipline he talks about, I wonder how a person who took so many post-graduate degrees and went abroad on lien was now denying the same to others. It is a pity that Prof. Simhadri also thinks he alone is a Dalit though all the one dozen employees he had dismissed from service belong to Dalit and Backward Classes. This shows his narrow-mindedness,'' he pointed out.

Joint Action Committee chairman of Andhra University, P. Apparao, IFTU general secretary, G. Panda, AITUC leader, G. Vamana Murthy, city unit president of APNGGO Association, K. Raja Rao, AIFTU general secretary, A. Rashtrapathi, Insurance Employees' union leader, B.B. Ganesh, and Bank Employees' Federation of India leader, D. Ramana Rao, also spoke.
