Gold stolen

BIDAR JUNE 13. Three people, posing as customers, stole gold biscuits from a jewellery shop in Bidar on Sunday.

According to the police, two women and a man entered Manik Prabhu jewellery shop in Mahakali Saraf Bazaar on Sunday afternoon and said they wanted to buy silver.

Police suspect that the accused stole the gold biscuits before the owner closed the cupboards.

The owner said in his complaint that he has lost at least 150 grams of gold, valued at Rs. 80,000.

New Town police have registered a case.

Burglary

BIDAR JUNE 13. Burglars broke into the house of a lawyer in Bidar on Saturday night.

The lawyer, Veershetty Nagshetty Bande, was out of town when the incident occurred.

He said in his complaint that the burglars entered the house by breaking open the back door.

They stole gold worth Rs. 50,000, silver worth Rs. 4,000 and Rs. 6,000 in cash, he said.

A case has been registered at the New Town police station.

Loans

MANGALORE JUNE 13. The Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Development Corporation is providing loans and subsidies to SCs and STs to take up self-employment under different government schemes.

An official press release said details could be had from the corporation's office at second floor, Janata Bazaar building, Ganapathi High School Road (ph: 2420114).

MANGALORE JUNE 13. The Academic Council of Mangalore University will meet on Tuesday at the new senate hall at Mangalagangotri at 10.30 a.m.

Rainfall

MANGALORE JUNE 13. Uppinangady received 35 mm rainfall, the maximum in the district, in the past 24 hours up to 8 a.m. on Sunday.

Puttur recorded 28 mm rainfall, Belthangady 25.4 mm, Sullia 24 mm, Bantwal 8.4 mm, and Bajpe Airport 9.2 mm rainfall during the period.

Foundation

MANGALORE JUNE 13. The Mariyamma Temple at Urva Boloor will get a new dining hall, kitchen, and a marriage hall.

The foundation stone for the facilities was laid by the Senior Vice-President (Personnel) of Mangalore Refineries and Petrochemicals Ltd., V.K. Talithaya, recently. Philanthropists, donors, and devotees were present on the occasion.

Gopalkrishna Suvarna, chief trustee of the temple, delivered the benedictions.

`Chiguru Sanje'

MYSORE JUNE 13. Vasundhara Performing Arts Centre will organise "Chiguru Sanje", a classical dance programme by children in the five-12 age group, on June 19.

More than 50 talented children will present classical dance in the Bharatanatyam Pandanalur style. "Chiguru Sanje" will be held at the Jaganmohan Palace Auditorium.

On the occasion, a release said, two veterans in the field of classical dance and Gamaka will be felicitated.

They are K. Raman (Bharatanatyam) from Tumkur and Vilaskumari (Gamaka) from Mysore.

The felicitation includes a cash prize of Rs. 2,000. It is in recognition of the contributions of the artistes in their fields.

Elected

MYSORE JUNE 13. N. Venkoba Rao has been elected President of Lions Club of Mysore for 2004-2005.

A release said that Prof. Rao and his team would be installed at a ceremony on June 20.

The Area Impact Leader of Lions Club International, K.G. Ramakrishna Murthy, would install the new team and administer the oath of office to it, the release added.

KPSC publishes list

BANGALORE June 13. The Karnataka Public Service Commission has published the list of candidates eligible for the main examination for the selection of five Assistant Conservators of Forests in the Department of Forests. The list has been displayed on the notice board of the Commission. It has also been posted on the Commission website at http://kpsc.kar.nic.in, according to the Chairman of the Commission.

JD(U) activists to stage protest

Bangalore June 13. Activists of the Bangalore City unit of the Janata Dal (United) will stage a demonstration near the Mahatma Gandhi statue here on Monday in protest against the rice scandal, the CET imbroglio, and the Cauvery waters issue, according to the president of the Bangalore City unit of the Janata Dal (U), G. Chandrashekar Reddy. Among those who are expected to participate in the demonstration are the former Chief Minister S.R. Bommai, the former Ministers B. Somashekar and H.N. Nanje Gowda, and J.C. Madhuswamy and Nagamani Nage Gowda.

Package: Hukkeri to talk to Dharam Singh

Belgaum June 13. The Minister for Agriculture Marketing, Prakash Hukkeri, said here today that the possibility of a special package for the expeditious development of border areas in the State would be explored. He told presspersons that he would discuss with the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, the problems of border areas, including Belgaum, Bijapur, Bidar, and Gulbarga districts, and urge him to announce a special package for the faster development of these areas. Mr. Hukkeri said he would make efforts to solve the problems of farmers in the State. The Minister said his priority would be to expedite the development works in the district; and one of them was to get the crest gates for the Hippargi barrage installed. Once the gates were installed and water stored in the barrage, the dependence on Maharashtra for drinking water would be minimised to a great extent, he said. Mr. Hukkeri, who arrived here in the morning for the first time after assuming his charge of Minister, was accorded a warm reception by his supporters, well-wishers, and Congress workers.
