Bodi merchant robbed

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, JUNE 13. An unidentified gang abducted a cardamom merchant and robbed him of Rs. 2.25 lakhs here on Saturday night.

The gang members, claiming to be sleuths of the Narcotics Intelligence Bureau Crime Investigation Department (NIBCID), intercepted a State Transport Corporation bus at Chekkanoorani on the city outskirts around midnight and checked the baggage of passengers.

They found currency wades stuffed in the bag of M. Rajaram, 47, a wholesale cardamom merchant of Bodi, who had boarded the bus at Arappalayam after making the day's collection from retail sellers.

On the pretext of taking the merchant for enquiry, the gang bundled him into a waiting car and sped away. Minutes after passing Melur on Madurai-Tiruchi National Highway, the gangsters attacked Mr. Rajaram, threw him out of the car and escaped with the cash.

On a complaint lodged by the merchant with the Chekkanoorani station, The police have formed a special team.

The Madurai SP, T. Sundaresan, who visited the spot, said the culprits were wearing khaki pants and brown shoes. An enquiry was ordered to ascertain whether the Melur police had refused to take the complaint from the merchant.
