Land acquisition for road project nearing completion

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, JUNE 13. The process of acquiring land for four-laning a portion of the North South and East West Corridor project from Soorapatti to Karuppayoorni in the district is nearing completion.

The Revenue Department, which has been entrusted with the task of acquiring the land falling under 26 villages extending from the Melur taluk to Madurai North taluk, is finalising 19.77 lakh square meters. A senior Revenue official told The Hindu here that the process would be completed soon, and the land handed over to the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), in four months. The present value of the earmarked area was Rs.21 crores, he said.

The `pattadars' whose land was being acquired would be compensated by the Central Government, and the sum would be routed through the Revenue Department.

The Revenue authorities started the acquisition after issuing the 3a 1 notification recently, and another notification will be issued shortly to state that the Government has acquired the land. The second notification will be issued after the pattadars are compensated. Only after this, the land will be handed over to the NHAI.

The four-laning work comes under the second phase of the North South and East West Corridor project.
