KOCHI, JUNE 13. The ladies of the Tamil Aikya Sangam are all geared up to form an active group. "We would like to do some socially useful work," said the treasurer of the sangam, Kalavathy Padmanabhan. The women's wing was formed two years ago but it has not been active, said Mrs. Padmanabhan. The second anniversary celebrations of the wing on Sunday was also a platform to make the women of the sangam come forward to contribute towards helping the community. Says L. Sappanimuthu, president of the sangam, "We hope the ladies will be able to start some income-generating projects which can be of help for the people in the community." A tailoring unit was started recently with loan from a commercial bank arranged by the sangam, he added. "We have been around for more than 40 years, but for those who are isolated from the community it is difficult to get any help from the government machinery," Mr. Sappanimuthu said. The organisation helps people of the community living in Kerala get ration cards, provides financial aid to the needy to educate their children and help find self-employment.
