KOTTAYAM, JUNE 14 . The Mahatma Gandhi University Syndicate, which met today, decided to constitute a five-member committee to hold consultations on the issue of the Cheruvandoor campus, which is before the Court. The Cheruvandoor campus of the university houses some of the departments of the School of Medical Sciences. The legal battle over the campus has come in the way of regularisation of the courses there, by their respective national bodies. The controversy, which began during the tenure of the former Vice-Chancellor, V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai, has been dragging on for the past many years. The students of these departments staged a dharna before the Syndicate demanding speedy resolution of the matter. The Syndicate sub-committee would hold consultations with the Chancellor, Cyriac Puthenpura, the original owner of the land, and Dr. Pillai, who is currently vice-chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC). The meeting also discussed the issue of the creation of new posts in the administrative segment and decided to call a joint meeting of the Staff and Finance sub- committees of the Syndicate early next month to discuss the feasibility of the move. The recommendations of the sub-committee on examinations were adopted by the Syndicate. The next session of the Syndicate would be held on July 20. Students belonging to the KSU and the SFI held separate agitations over the issue of Cheruvandoor campus. The agitation resulted in a minor altercation, but timely intervention of police averted clashes.
