Perambalur
By Our Staff Reporter
PERAMBALUR, JUNE 14. The Government Order downgrading a host of town panchayats in the State has left Perambalur with the dubious distinction of being the only district to have a village panchayat as its headquarters. Eight town panchayats in the district including the Perambalur Town Panchayat have been downgraded as village panchayats. The classification comes into force with effect from Monday. In a press release issued here today, the Collector, D. Vivekanandan, said Ariyalur, Arumbavur, Kurumbalur, Labbaikudikadu, Perambalur, Poolampadi, Udayarpalayam and Varadarajanpettai town panchayats were classified as village panchayats. The Perambalur town panchayat council, at its meeting held in January, adopted a unanimous resolution urging the State Government not to downgrade the status of the town panchayat. It pointed out that the population of the town had gone up to 35,000 from 29,698. Its annual income was about Rs.1.40 crores. A similar resolution was adopted by the Ariyalur town panchayat council also. Incidentally, Ariyalur too remained as the headquarters of the Ariyalur district for a few months. The Ariyalur town panchayat council mooted a proposal for merging the adjoining village of Eruthukaranpatti with Ariyalur so that the population would rise up to 31,055. The Ariyalur town panchayat's annual income was Rs.one crore.
