David, Viraj clinch top spot

BANGALORE, JUNE 14. Kapil Dev, Brand Ambassador of Christel House, a school that educates needy children in Bangalore, was the first to tee off for the Christel House Open at the Karnataka Golf Association here on Monday. The ball that Kapil used was then sent to California where it will be used for the last putt to signal the end of the tournament played at 20 courses by 3000 golfers and in 20 time zones.

Over a hundred golfers participated in the Bangalore edition of the tournament. Sportspersons like Aashish Ballal (hockey Olympian), Naren Kumar (motor rallyist), cricketers Venkatesh Prasad and Sujith Somasundar joined a number of corporate golfers in the unique tournament, which is seeking a place in the Guiness Book of Records.

The winners of the Bangalore leg were David D'Souza and Viraj Suvarna who clinched the top spot in the best nett score section and earned a ticket to play in the world championship of the event at Mission Hills, California on August 30 and 31.

D'Souza and Viraj Suvarna actually tied with Ajay and Sangeeta Verma on the final scores. D'Souza and Viraj, however, had better countback scores. Alok Gupta and Snehal Kulshreshta finished third.

The event was played on a `Texas Two man team scramble' format where the teams handicap was 75 per cent of the average handicap of the two players.

Naren and Somasundar won the best gross award with a score of two under par 70. Naresh Sachdeva and Balu Mankani finished runners-up in the gross score section.

Hitesh Joshi and Utpal Desai won the `best front nine' award and Sunil Shetty and Arun Pandurang bagged the `best back nine' award.

Sangeeta Verma won the 3M Innovative `Monster Putt' prize while Frank Koster, CEO, ING Vysya Life Insurance won the `longest drive' award. GS Baweja landed `Closest to the Pin' on the par three 15th hole.
