COIMBATORE, JUNE 14. The All-Bharat Confederation of Senior Citizens and Pensioners has appealed to the State Government to settle the arrears of pensioners. In a communication to the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, the Sulur Taluk unit secretary of the association, R. Eswaran, said there was no mention of the pensioners grievances in any of the announcements made by her after the elections. Problems of about three lakh pensioners and family pensioners remained unresolved, he said. Among them was settlement of the arrears impounded in 1998. Sixty per cent of the dues for those who retired between January 1, 1996 and March 31, 1998, was impounded. The dues should have been settled last financial year itself. Hence the amount should be paid in a single instalment, he said. Two instalments of DA (total six per cent) granted by the Centre from January 1,2002, had been denied by the State government. One more demand was permission for the pensioners to receive treatment at hospitals where those in service were allowed to get. Besides, the medical allowance for pensioners should be raised from Rs. 50 to Rs. 100 as being done by the Centre.
