Gowd Saraswat Brahmins staging a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office in Mangalore on Monday, seeking protection of the rights of the Kashi Math swamiji.
MANGALORE, JUNE 14. Gowd Saraswat Brahmins staged a protest here on Monday and submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner seeking protection of the rights of a senior swamiji of their community, Sudhindra Thirtha. Devotees of the Kashi Math participated in the protest. The devotees, who consider Sudhindra Thirtha as their Matadhipathi, have urged the Deputy Commissioner to protect the rights of their matadhipathi in the wake of a challenge posed by a former junior swamiji of the math. The protestors alleged that the former junior swamiji had proclaimed himself to be the matadhipathi. He had also retained some idols of the Kashi Math Samsthan after he had been removed from the math's service, they said. The devotees said only the matadhipathi could be in charge of the idols. The protest march started from the Venkataramana Temple on Car Street and ended outside the Deputy Commissioner's office where the President of the Kanara Chamber of Commerce, R.D Kini, the Bharatiya Janata Party district unit President, Pratap Simha Nayak, the President of Gowd Saraswat Brahmin Temples Association, K. Sridhar Kamath, presented the memorandum. The memorandum was submitted under the banner of the Gowd Saraswat Brahmin Hitha Rakshana Vedike, which is in the care of the Venkataramana Temple, according to a press release.
