TIRUCHI, JUNE 14 . The need for improving the female literacy rate in Tiruchi district was stressed by the Chief Educational Officer, V. C. Rameswara Murugan. Speaking at a function to mark the installation of office-bearers of the Lions Club of Tiruchi Mid-Town here on Sunday, he said the district accounted for a female literacy rate of 71 per cent, compared to the male literacy rate of 79 per cent. The Education Department was making all-out efforts, especially through the `Sarva Siksha Abhiyan' (Education for All) programme to increase the female literacy rate. A special programme, `National Programme for the Education of Girls at Elementary Level' (NPEGEL), was being implemented in the Marungapuri block for stepping up the women's literacy rate. Mr. Rameswara Murugan said that to bring drop-outs to the mainstream of education, a total of 92 bridge courses were started in all blocks. An exclusive programme for the physically disabled children was another highlight of the SSA. As many as 2,030 physically disabled children were enrolled in the last academic year in the district. Apart from imparting education, special health camps were also conducted for the treatment of disability. Mr. Rameswara Murugan said the SSA was being implemented with a special thrust on the provision of infrastructure, as part of achieving quality education. A sum of Rs. three crores was spent last year for the construction of additional classrooms and other buildings for schools. The Education Department wanted to coordinate with service organisations for providing infrastructure to the schools. He appealed to service organisations to contribute their mite.
