Freedom fighters seek hike in pension

By Our Special Correspondent

COIMBATORE, JUNE 14. The Coimbatore District Freedom Fighters' Association has appealed to the Central Government to increase the pension for the freedom fighters to Rs 5,000 a month from Rs 3,000.

This was one of the resolutions passed at a meeting of the association held here recently.

Its secretary , V.Girikrishnan, told The Hindu that they had been provided an allowance of Rs 1,170 per month at present. "It would be extremely helpful to our families if we are to be paid Rs 5,000 in total", he said.

He lamented that for the past eight years, their grievances had not been redressed by the Central Government. Pointing out that the State Government was granting only Rs 1,500 to the wards of freedom fighters after the demise of the latter, he pleaded that they should be paid the "full pension " of Rs 3,000 as was done by the Central Government.
