This Day That Age
The Madras Government have abolished the condensed MBBS course for enabling the LMPs to take MBBS degrees from this year and consequently raised the number of seats in the medical colleges in the State. Hitherto, qualified LMPs were allowed to join medical colleges and were awarded the MBBS degree after completing a two-year course successfully. One-tenth of the total number of seats were reserved for this course. But, according to the authorities, this "condensed course" was not popular and did not attract students. The Government have, therefore, abolished this course from this year and raised the number of seats. Of the three medical colleges in the State, the number of seats in the Madras Medical College has consequently been raised from 125 to 135, and that in the Stanley Medical College from 75 to 110. The Madurai Medical College, to be opened during this academic year, will have 50 seats.
