COIMBATORE, JUNE 15. The officials of the Forest Department are awaiting the post-mortem examination report of a female elephant, which died on the banks of the Kodungaraipallam river (bordering Tamil Nadu and Kerala) in the Periyanaikenpalayam range on Sunday. It is learnt that a herd of elephants came to the river for drinking water and one of the elephants collapsed. Following information about the ailing elephant, the District Forest Officer, P. Durairasu, deputed a team on Monday with a veterinarian to revive the animal. But the team had to face stiff resistance from the herd that formed a ring around their ailing mate thereby preventing the team from attending on it. After nearly two hours of struggle, the forest personnel managed to chase away the herd. By then the elephant was dead. The forest personnel suspect that it died due to water contamination and resultant stomach infection in the wake of recent rain.
