Civic chief goes on fast

By Our Special Correspondent

VRIDDHACHALAM, JUNE 15. The Vriddhachalam Municipal Chairman, M. Valluvan, today observed hunger strike on the Municipal office premises, demanding implementation of resolutions passed so far by the civic body. He alleged inordinate delay in the execution of the projects and attributed it to official apathy.

Mr. Valluvan urged the Cuddalore Collector, Gagandeep Singh Bedi, to conduct an enquiry into the delay and set things right, so that people's expectations could be fulfilled. He told The Hindu that Section 35 of the Tamil Nadu District Municipalities Act, 1920 provided for such a measure.

The Chairman said it was his desire that the Municipality attained economic self-sufficiency, but due to irregularities, revenue generation of the civic body was severely curtailed. For instance, tax was not levied on 2,000 households and over 1,000 pipe connections were pending.

He said the municipality incurred a loss of Rs. 1 crore. The council did not meet since September 2003 because the review meeting he had called for on the "action taken by the officials on the resolutions passed by the Council" did not materialise. Of the 729 resolutions passed in the past two years, 170 remained unexecuted.

The Commissioner Incharge, V. Krishnakumar, said he had been running the affairs of the Municipality for the past six months.
