Ritwik, Joshna to lead Indian challenge

CHENNAI, JUNE 15. Top players Ritwik Bhattacharya and Joshna Chinappa will spearhead the Indian challenge in the Asian senior squash championship to be held in Kuala Lumpur from June 18 to 26.

The individual events begin on June 19 and the team competition follows on June 23. Ritwik and Joshna have been seeded 5/8 in the respective categories, while the Indian team is seeded fourth in the men's section and third in the women's category.

India, host Malaysia, Hong Kong, Pakistan, Japan, Korea, Chinese Taipei, Macau, Singapore, Jordan, Kuwait, Sri Lanka and Thailand are the participating teams.

Speaking at a function on Tuesday where Natalia, the clothing firm associated with the Squash Rackets Federeration of India (SRFI) for the national junior development programme distributed the outfits to the team members and officials, N. Ramachandran, Secretary-General, SRFI, wished the team well.

As President of the Asian Squash Federation, he said he would be in Kuala Lumpur for the ASF's general body meeting on June 25.

Maj. (R) S. Manian, Consultant Coach, said the team had been in training since January but said the task ahead would be tough.

Considering that most members in the team were still juniors, he thought this would be a valuable experience.

Other team members:

Men: Saurav Ghosal, Siddarth Suchde, Manish Chotrani.

Women: Mekhala Subedar, Alisha Mashruwala and Supriya Balsekar. Gaurav Nandrajog is participating in the championship at no cost to the Government. Other than Maj. Manian, the officials accompanying the team are Cyrus Poncha, men's coach, Rajiv Reddy, women's coach and V. Laxman, Manager.
