Nepal in quarterfinals

KUALA LUMPUR, JUNE 15 Nepal's Paresh Lohani smashed seven fours in nine balls — all that were needed for his team to defeat Iran and book a place in the quarterfinals of the Asian Cricket Council trophy in Malaysia.

Iran was all out for a humiliating 29 runs — the lowest total in the tournament's eight-year history — in 23.4 overs before Nepal's openers took just a few minutes to secure their victory.

In other games on Monday, Oman beat Bahrain by four wickets, Singapore defeated Thailand by six wickets and 105 runs and Saudi Arabia beat Maldives by 91 runs. Bahrain was all out for 216 in 49.2 overs after electing to bat. Bahrain's Fahad Sadiq and Mirza Yaqoob steadied a shaky start with a 104-run partnership .

Oman started badly, losing four wickets in the first 10 overs before Rakesh Sharma and Syed Azbar Ali Adnan settled into a 107-run partnership. Syed Azhar finished with 65 not out.

Singapore batted first and scored 275 for four wickets. Thailand couldn't answer and was all out for 170 in 49.4 overs. Maldives bowled out Saudi Arabia for 262 runs in 49.4 overs, but was held to just 171 in 43.4 overs.

The champion and runner-up in the tournament, which ends on June 22, will qualify for the ICC trophy in June next year in Ireland.— AP
