India-Pakistan series from tomorrow

By Our Sports Reporter

NEW DELHI, JUNE 15. IBSF World champion Pankaj Advani and runner-up Saleh Mohammed will face off again in the Indian leg of the India-Pakistan snooker Test series, which begins in Chandigarh on Thursday.

India has a better side on paper given the current form of its players. Alok Kumar is in brilliant touch in all forms of the green baize sport and is fresh from winning the Asian snooker championship at Jordan (beating Advani in the final). Former champion Yasin Merchant too reached the semifinals.

The Pakistani team, which beat India 43-33 in the Pakistan leg of the 2003 series last December, was given the clearance by the Union Ministry of Sports on Friday.

The series, to be held from June 17 to 20, will have one Test match each day comprising five singles and two doubles.

The side which emerges victorious in four matches will be declared the winner. In total, there will be three Tests on three days with one day reserved for the Peace Cup.

In a late development, Pakistan captain Naveen Kumar Perwani, withdrew from the series citing personal reasons.

According to the Vice-President of the Billiards and Snooker Federation of India (BSFI), Ravi K. Tandon, Perwani wanted to be with his father who is suffering from brain tumour.

"Perwani's father had to be hospitalised and the cueist wanted to be by his side,'' Mr. Tandon said.

The rest of the team along with Perwani's replacement will reach Delhi on Wednesday morning before heading to Chandigarh.

The series, being sponsored by Rexello Castors, will be telecast live on Doordarshan from June 18 to 20. A total of Rs. three lakhs in prize money is at stake.

The teams:

India: Pankaj Advani, Alok Kumar, Yasin Merchant, Rafath Habib and Manan Chandra.

Pakistan: Saleh Mohammed, Khurram Hussain Agha, Imran Shehzad and Mohammed Yousuf.
