ANANTAPUR, JUNE 15. The Communist Party of India (CPI) has criticised the attacks against TDP men allegedly by Congressmen in the district. Such incidents, at a time when farmers are ending lives in distress, are shameful, the party leader K. Ramakrishna, has said. Talking to newspersons here on Tuesday, he expressed concern over the spurt in the attacks on TDP workers, leaders and their properties. Such undesirable attacks needed to be controlled as the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, had already announced his commitment to end factionism and improve law and order, he said. He also urged the two Ministers from the district -- J.C. Diwakar Reddy and N. Raghuveera Reddy -- to initiate steps to prevent such attacks. He requested the official machinery to act sternly against those violating the law. On the farmers' protests over problems in seed supply, he said the administration had failed to assess the farmers' needs and meet them in time. The problem of farmers storming the sales points had arisen due to ignorance of the fact that they had no seed by the administration. Mr. Ramakrishna urged the Government to ensure supply of quality seed to all farmers in required quantity. He stated that a delegation of the CPI leaders from the State led by the party deputy leader in Lok Sabha, Gurudas Gupta, had called on the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, at New Delhi two days ago and explained the problems being faced by farmers and their distress suicide. They had urged the Prime Minister to announce a special package with Rs. 1,000 crores to the State to overcome the crisis. The Prime Minister had expressed concern over such distress suicide occurring even 57 years after Independence, Mr. Ramakrishna, who is also the secretary of AP Rythu Sangham, said. The Prime Minister had assured to order a study into the existing crop insurance scheme for making changes to benefit the farmers of upland areas and drought areas.
