Staggered supply of seed planned

By Our Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR, JUNE 15. The District Collector, Y.V. Anuradha, has assured the farming community that all eligible farmers will get groundnut seed. The obstacles experienced in the seed supply so far are due to delay in the movement of seed from stock point to sales point.

Talking to newspersons here on Teusday, she sought to allay fears of the farming community that they might not get the seed.

She explained that only 85,000 quintals of seed was exhausted on the first two days. About 76,800 farmers had taken the seed. About 1.9 lakh quintals seed was stocked in the district before taking up the supply.

She explained that they were unable to stock large quantities at mandal level due to lack of storage facility. As a result, some delay was occurring in moving the stock from buffer point. The State Government was ready to supply 4.2 lakh quintals of seed to Anantpaur district, she said.

To avoid anxiety and unnecessary rush at the sales points the administration had decided to supply seed once in two days. Coupons would be issued on the remaining two days.

Coupons would be issued only to the extent of stock stored at the sales point. Besides, the problem was occurring due to the unexpected demand for JL-24 variety seed.

Generally, the farmers of the district would prefer TMV-2 variety, which could withstand long dry spells and less rainy days.

But, the early rain was forcing farmers to prefer JL-24 with a hope of getting higher yields, the Collector explained. There was heavy demand for JL-24 in Bathlapalli, Gorantla, Mudigubba and Puttaparthi mandals.

Further, the Collector stated that only two counters would be opened in each mandal, against four-five opened in a few mandals, to avoid rush.

The Joint Collector, Shashibhushan Kumar, also appealed to the farmers that there was no need for hurrying up.
