BJP, morcha

leaders quit

CUDDAPAH: The Bharatiya Janata Party district vice-president, N. Maheswara Reddy, and the Bharatiya Janata Dalit Morcha State executive member, S. Bharavi, resigned from their posts and the party on Tuesday.

In separate statements, they observed that the BJP fared badly in recent polls due to its alliance with the Telugu Desam Party. However, the BJP leadership was in no mood to snap ties with the latter either at the national or the State level. They decided to quit the BJP as continuation of the BJP-TDP alliance could jeopardise the BJP's existence in future. They thanked the BJP leaders and cadre who extended their cooperation to them.

Pratibha awards

CUDDAPAH: The Helen Keller's Handicapped Student Pratibha awards will be given away to deaf and dumb, blind and other physically disabled children, who secured the first and second highest marks in the SSC and seventh class examinations on June 27, the birth anniversary of Helen Keller.

The Principal of Helen Keller's High School for the Deaf here, P. Dowlat Khan, in a statement on Tuesday called upon the two toppers in SSC and seventh class to apply to the school for the awards by enclosing the attested marks list, medical certificate on their handicap and letter of the headmaster of the school concerned, by June 22.

join Congress

NELLORE: Some 25 functionaries belonging to the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), led by the district general secretary, P.T. Rangarajan, joined the Congress at a function held at the Indira Congress Bhavan, Nellore, on Tuesday. They were admitted into the party, in the presence of Anam Vivekananda Reddy, K. Vishnuvardhana Reddy and A. Prabhakara Reddy, MLAs.

NELLORE: The practical examination of the Intermediate advanced supplementary public examination will be held at the KAC Government Junior College, Nellore, from June 16 to 19. Students belonging to Government, aided and unaided junior colleges who have applied for the examination are eligible for the practicals. They can have further details by contacting the college authorities.

NELLORE: The district-level executive committee meeting of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will be held at the kalyanamandapam, located inside the Kasturidevi school, Nellore, on Wednesday afternoon.

ANANTAPUR: The Minister for Agriculture, N. Raghuveera Reddy, on Tuesday said had no need to be worried about supply of seed groundnut as it would be continued till the end of June.

Speaking during an inspection of a seed sales point at Amarapuram in the district he warned the traders against attempts to divert the seed to Karnataka or recycle it.

Centre's package for BHPV

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Visakhapatnam MP, N. Jarnandhana Reddy, on Tuesday said the Centre would soon announce a bail-out package for the ailing Bharat Heavy Plate and Vessels Limited (BHPV). Employees of BHPV immediately called off their 123-day-old relay hunger strike. Accompanied by the Minister for Commercial Taxes, Konathala Ramakrishna, and the city MLAs -- Dronamraju Satyanarayana and Tippala Gurumurthy Reddy -- Mr. Reddy visited BHPV and told the employees that the package was moved by the Heavy Industry Ministry and that the Finance Ministry was inclined to sanction it. The MP said he was pursuing with the Centre for

de-linking BHPV from its holding company, Bharat Yantra Nigam Limited. The MP, who also visited Visakhapatnam Steel Plant,held talks with its Chairman, B.K. Panda. Mr. Reddy, who earlier met displaced persons at Balacheruvu gate, urged the VSP management to consider their demand for employment in the plant itself.

92 per cent qualify in ICET

TIRUPATI: The results of Integrated Common Entrance Test (ICET-2004) were released by the Vice-Chancellor of Sri Venkateswara University, P. Murali, here on Tuesday. The test was conducted by the university on May 29 in 121 centres across the State for admission into MBA and MCA courses. Of the 60,556 candidates registered for the test, 57,152 appeared, of whom 52,763 got qualified, accounting for 92 per cent. While 69 per cent of the boys qualified for the test, only 31 per cent of the girls who took the test emerged successful. The top ten rankers (in the ascending order) are: V. Ashwath (Hyderabad), Srinivas Sushanth Daliparthi (Visakhapatnam), Sanjeev Garuda Venkata (Visakhapatnam), Pulugurtha Shivcharan (Hyderabad), Jasti Neelakanta Prasad (Guntur), Prasanna Hedge (Hyderabad), Sowmya Sujani Kolluri (Visakhapatnam), Batchala Muralikrishna (Sreekakulam), M. Krutivas (Hyderabad) and Duggirala Purnachandra Rao (Visakhapatnam). The ICET convenor, D. Changal Raju, said the results could be obtained from the websites -- www.svu.ac.in and www.apsche.org.eom

NABARD grants Rs. 59-crore aid

HYDERABAD: National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned Rs. 59.91 crores as loan assistance to the State Government for taking up 19 minor irrigation projects and two lift irrigation projects. The aid was sanctioned under the Agriculture Infrastructure and Credit Fund (AICF) by the Project Sanctioning Committee of NABARD at a meeting held in New Delhi on June 12, according to a press release issued here on Tuesday. The projects would provide assured irrigation to an ayacut of nearly 10,000 hectares and create non-recurring employment to the extent of 57.09 lakh mandays.

Rivers in spate; people alerted

Hyderabad: People living on the riverside and at ferry points of the Godavari and two of its tributaries -- Indravathi and Sabari -- have been asked by the Government to clear the places and go to safer locations as both the tributaries are in spate. The Commissioner for Disaster Management, Asutosh Mishra, said here on Tuesday there were flash floods due to heavy discharge from upstream following torrential rain in their catchment areas. The alert was applicable to those living abutting the Godavari in Khammam, East and West Godavari districts. The Godavari was also slowly rising.

Conveyance allowance hiked

HYDERABAD: The Government on Tuesday issued orders enhancing the monthly conveyance allowance from Rs.300 to Rs.400 paid to physically disabled employees and teachers as recommended by the anomalies committee, according to a press release issued by the Andhra Pradesh Progressive Recognised Teachers Union. The Government also issued orders increasing the scout allowance from Rs.15 to Rs.50 to scout masters in Government schools, said B. Mohan Reddy, president, and P. Sudhakar Reddy, general secretary, in another release.

Teachers to rally for farmers

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Democratic Teachers Federation will hold rallies/demonstrations in district headquarters and at Collectorates on June 19 to express solidarity with farmers. K. Laxma Reddy, president, Y. Ramana Reddy, vice-president, M. Gangadhar, general secretary, and M.V. Narsinga Rao, secretary, in a statement issued here on Tuesday, said that steps taken by the Government to tackle farmers' suicide were inadequate. They stressed that sustained and long-term measures should be implemented. The measures were: proper and quick disbursal of assistance under the package, provision of adequate irrigation, timely loans by the Government/cooperative financial institutions and checking adulteration of seed and pesticides.

Goenka FAPCCI president

HYDERABAD: O.P. Goenka and C.V. Achuta Rao were unanimously elected president and senior vice-president of the Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FAPCCI) for 2004-05 at its annual general body meeting here on Tuesday. Mr. Goenka was senior vice-president for 2003-04 and served as chairman/member of various committees of the federation. Mr. Rao was vice-president last year, according to a press release.

Monsoon advances

Hyderabad: The south west monsoon advanced into the rest of Telangana on Tuesday, thus bringing the entire State under its fold. There was isolated rain in coastal Andhra and Telangana while weather was dry in Rayalaseema. Isolated rain/thundershower is likely in coastal Andhra, Telangana and Rayalaseema on Wednesday.
