Kerala CEO meets officials
MADURAI JUNE 15. The Chief Electoral Officer of Kerala, P.J. Thomas, held discussions with election officials, including the District Collector, D. Raajendiran, here today. Mr. Thomas, who has been appointed enquiry officer to probe into allegations of large-scale deletion of names from electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu, examined records on the revision of voters' lists. The Madurai Corporation Commissioner, A. Karthik, and a few Assistant Returning Officers were also present. Talking to newspersons, Mr. Thomas said complaints of deletion would be received till June 21 and an enquiry would be held only after that date. The Election Commission had directed him to give ``special emphasis'' to Madurai and Chennai, he added.
Suitcase of Kalam's kin missing
MADURAI JUNE 15. A suitcase belonging to Syed Ibrahim (37), nephew of the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, was reported missing from a bus here last night. According to police sources, Mr. Ibrahim, a Life Insurance Corporation of India agent, arrived at the Arappalayam bus stand from Dindigul by a private bus when he realised the suitcase, containing his passport, $300 and an air ticket, was missing.
4 boys riding bike die in accident
VILLUPURAM June 15. Four of five teenagers riding a motorcycle died when they were knocked down allegedly by a private bus on the Kallakurichi-Kachirapalyam route near here today. The other, Balaji, was taken to the Salem Government Hospital. The police said the deceased were Raja, Balu, Venkatesh and Vignesh. All the boys were in the 14-15 age group.
3 held for attack on pastor
NAMAKKAL JUNE 15. The Velur police have arrested three youths in connection with the assault on a pastor here. K. Senthil (21), A. Ponnar (23) and A. Rajasekar, all from Velur in Namakkal district, have been arrested on charges of assaulting S.A. Samuel (40) on Friday last. Paramathi, magistrate, remanded them to 15 days custody.
Vigil stepped up
Nagercoil June 15. The police have stepped up vigil in the coastal areas of the district following seizure of country bombs from fishermen hamlets at Ramanthurai. Speaking to The Hindu the Superintendent of Police (in-charge), M.C. Sarangan, said a special team was formed to conduct raids in the villages at and around Ramanthurai, following Sunday's clash between two groups. In raids in the last three days, the police seized 42 country bombs and also arrested seven persons including two persons in possession of bombs. The police would invoke the Explosives Substance Act against those who possessed or used country bombs for anti-social activities, he said. The seven persons were arrested yesterday for throwing a country bomb during the clash, which erupted in connection with the construction of a compound wall.
Meet on coastal regulation zone
CHENNAI JUNE 15. The National Coastal Zone Management Authority of the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests and the Institute for Ocean Management, Anna University, are organising a two-day national workshop on Coastal Regulation Zone notification from June 18. A. Raja, Union Minister of Environment and Forests, will inaugurate the workshop. All coastal zone management authorities of States, Union Territory Governments and 14 Central Government departments will participate. Besides this, subject experts, non-governmental organisations and other national committee members connected with coastal environment are taking part. According to S. Ramachandran, director, Anna University Institute for Ocean Management and chief programme coordinator, the workshop assumes significance as it deals with the important Environment Protection Law, especially the CRZ notification. The practical difficulties in implementing the CRZ and the possible re-engineering process are likely to emerge from the discussions.
`U.S. occupation must end'
CHENNAI JUNE 15. Members of Communist Party of India (Marxist) today staged a demonstration here to protest the American occupation of Iraq. Some of the agitators blindfolded themselves while a few others wore bandages as a mark of the protest, organised at West Mambalam. They raised slogans against the "ill treatment of Iraqis" and demanded the United States forces to leave the country.
JD(S) candidate
Bangalore June 15. Industrialist M.A.M. Ramaswamy is expected to be the Janata Dal (Secular) candidate for the Rajya Sabha elections from Karnataka. Sources in the party told The Hindu here today that with 58 votes, it could easily ensure the victory of Mr. Ramaswamy. He supported the Janata Dal (Secular) in the recent elections and the party was looking forward to an even more active participation by him in future.
