Congress hits back at Naidu

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, JUNE 15. The Congress has asked the TD president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, to stop making `irrational and illogical' allegations against the Congress Government.

Referring to Mr. Naidu's claim that law and order had worsened in the State, Vasanth Kumar, G. Babji and K. Murali Mohan, MLAs, said here on Tuesday that Mr. Naidu had no right to criticise the Congress Government on this count as the former Chief Minister was responsible for AP becoming a crime capital of the country. In all, 21,820 murders had taken place during the TDP's nine-year-long rule. Congress workers were hounded mercilessly by TD leaders, they alleged.

They said Mr. Naidu inducted `criminals' into the Cabinet and the Lok Satta found fault with the TDP for fielding several `criminals' in the 2004 Assembly elections.

The Congress Government under the leadership of Dr. Reddy was sincerely attempting to eliminate the menace of factionism and in the process, had brought two bitter rivals together in Panyam. The TDP leader would not have reacted in the manner he did if he were really interested in restoring peace in the troubled region, they said asking Mr. Naidu to stop politicising the initiative.
