HYDERABAD, JUNE 15. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has strongly opposed the State Government's move to re-appoint Justice Somasekhara to head the Commission of Inquiry into the Yeleru land acquisition scam. The main Opposition party alleged that Mr. Somasekhara had sought certain benefits from the erstwhile TDP Government which were not conceded. "In re-appointing him, the Congress Government has malafide intentions", said the TDP leader, Kadiam Srihari, who was the then Minister for Major Irrigation. Addressing a press conference here today, he said the TDP was not opposed to re-opening the inconclusive inquiry if it was headed either by a Supreme Court or High Court judge. Its objection was only to Mr. Somasekhara for whom the former CLP leader, P. Janardhan Reddy, was making a strong pitch for re-appointment. The TDP leader contended that the Andhra Pradesh High Court had suspended the Government order appointing Mr. Somasekhara to head the Commission. Subsequently in 2001, an SLP filed in the Supreme Court against the Court's order was dismissed. However, the Government, on the basis of reports filed by various inquiry committees, including the one headed by S. Ray, took action against the guilty persons, including some judicial officers.
