HYDERABAD, JUNE 15. The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has urged the police to be people-friendly, particularly towards the deprived sections, and earn a good name by working honestly. Speaking at the concluding function of the 47th all-India Police Duty Meet on Tuesday, he told the police to protect the interests of the down trodden, the Scheduled Castes, the Scheduled Tribes, women and the "have-nots". Underscoring the importance of the Police Department in maintaining law and order, he said that with rising population the crime rate also was increasing, particularly white-collar offences. He assured that the Government would be pro-active and extend all help to the department. The Home Minister, K. Jana Reddy, said the Government would ensure professionalism and stressed the need for police to pay particular attention in curbing social vices. Later, the Chief Minister presented trophies and medals to the winning teams. Andhra Pradesh won the highest number of 23 medals. In all, 29 teams from 22 States, a Union Territory and six central police organisations participated in the event. The DGP, S.R. Sukumara, the Secretary, all-India Police Sports Control Board, Rajagopal, and other senior officials spoke.
