HYDERABAD, JUNE 15. Lok Satta, the Federation for Empowerment of Local Governments, and other partner organisations today launched a 15-day nation-wide signature campaign for empowerment of local governments. Activists will collect signatures from all the elected local government representatives throughout the country. The representatives are panchayat ward members, sarpanches, MPTCs, ZPTCs, MPPs, ZP chairpersons, municipal councillors/chairpersons and mayors. George Mathew, director, Institute of Social Sciences, Delhi, is coordinating the campaign. Signatures will be collected with the following demands: formation of a ministry of local government by merging the existing ministries of panchayat raj and rural development, constitution of district governments embracing both rural and urban areas, clear devolution of functions, functionaries and funds, implementation of the recommendation of State Finance Commission by the State Governments should be made mandatory, State legislatures should be empowered to alter the structure of local government.
