MADURAI, JUNE 15. An intensive drive is under way in the district to get children admitted to schools, and the Education Department has set an enrolment target of 20 per cent more than last year's total. The priority is for admitting students to the elementary and middle schools and motivating the dropouts to return to classrooms. The district has 1,406 primary and middle schools with a students' strength of 2.70 lakhs. The drive, `Admission- 2004', was launched on June 1 when the schools were reopened, and admissions would go on till July 31, Education Department officials said. The Department has been conducting awareness rallies and meetings. Members of the Parent-Teachers' Associations, the Village Education Committees and the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan have been roped in for the drive. A census of children of school-going age has also been taken up. The District Elementary Education Officer, Pon. Kumar, said rural areas were the primary target, as more awareness should be created there. Besides, the child labour component was given more attention to draw children from workplaces to school. Mr. Kumar said the response so far was good, though the number of students enrolled could be given only after the two-month drive. He said the drive was taken up after the Director of School Education asked the district educational authorities to increase the enrolment. There was good response in Sedapatti, Vadipatti and Kallupatti panchayat unions. The Elementary Education officials are preparing proposals for starting new schools in `potential areas', and the process of locating the places is on. Recruitment for filling 56 vacancies in the primary and middle schools would be completed in a fortnight, Mr. Kumar said.
