Police to intensify night patrolling

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI, JUNE 15 . The city police have enhanced its number of mobile parties to five to intensify night patrolling in crime-prone areas for about four hours from 11.00 p.m. every day, in a bid to prevent burglaries.

The three newly formed units are an addition to the ones already under the control of the Fort Station, undertaking night rounds in the Chathiram Bus Stand area, and the Cantonment station respectively. The five mobile parties, each comprising a Sub-Inspector and four constables, have been entrusted with the task of patrolling every nook and corner in five identified crime-prone areas of Karumandapam, K.K. Nagar, Woraiyur Ramalinga Nagar, Chathiram Bus Stand area, and Thillai Nagar, the Commissioner of Police, T. P. Sundaramoorthy, told The Hindu .

People found loitering about on the streets during night hours would be subjected to an interrogation and all efforts made to implement `visible policing', the Commissioner said, adding that the night patrolling had been intensified following house-breaking incidents reported from these areas in the recent weeks. The mobile parties, equipped with walkie-talkies, were expected to be on the move constantly. The Commissioner also said he himself would visit the areas where night patrolling was undertaken, especially Kaurmandapam, Ramalinga Nagar, K.K. Nagar and Thillai Nagar.

The patrolling began today to coincide with the usual enhanced surveillance on account of the `dark days', a five-day period comprising two days prior to and two days following the no moon day. Under normal circumstances, surprise checks would be conducted on vehicles on these days. But, from now on, vehicle checks would be a frequent phenomenon. The Inspectors and Sub-Inspectors had been instructed to maintain vigil during night hours, by planning their work schedule accordingly, he said.

Since even internal transfers have been prohibited by the Government by a recent order, the Commissioner has drawn experienced policemen from armed reserve wing and have posted them `on duty' in the crime-prone area police stations including K.K. Nagar, Woraiyur and Thillai Nagar. Surplus strength from other police stations, barring vital police stations such as the Cantonment and Srirangam police stations, had also been posted in stations facing shortage of manpower.

Four constables each had also been posted at Edamalaipattipudur and Airport police stations. The strength of the K.K. Nagar police station had been augmented with the Commissioner's six personal guards — one head constable and five constables. The official line of thinking is that since the office of the Inspector General of Police is also located on the same premises at Khajamalai, along with the paraphernalia of personal guards, the need for a separate unit of personal guards for the Commissioner is obviated.

Meanwhile, official sources indicated that the new Deputy Commissioners for Law and Order, and Crime and Traffic, would be announced in a day or two. For the first time in the recent years, the recent transfer shuffle has left two vital wings of the department headless in the city. As of now, the Commissioner is in charge of these posts. After the postings, the night surveillance exercise would be revamped, Mr. Sundaramoorthy added.
