Cases of tax evasion detected in two areas

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, JUNE 15. Can a site in which a shopping complex has been built be described as "vacant land"? Yes, according to the records of the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike's (BMP) revenue department.

The Mayor, P.R. Ramesh, who went on an inspection of Mathikere and Sanjaynagar found cases of evasion of property tax and encroachment of public land. The revenue records showed that land on 80 Feet Road at Sanjaynagar, where "Ganesh Timbers shopping complex" is located, is "vacant," and the question of whether the owners of the building had been evading taxes came up.

Mr. Ramesh came across several methods adopted by property owners in Mathikere and Sanjaynagar to evade tax. He directed the Deputy Commissioner (West), H.V. Parshwanath, to suspend the revenue inspector and the tax collector. "Such serious anomalies will not be tolerated. This is sheer irresponsibility on the part of both the officials," the Mayor told presspersons. He said that though the tax collection in Sanjaynagar should be over Rs. 4.5 crore, the BMP had collected only Rs. 2 crore. In Jai Ram slum near Mathikere, the Mayor found that public land had been encroached upon by many families, one of which had built a house on a manhole. He ordered the officials to serve notice.

Mr. Ramesh inspected the construction of drainage in the same area. He expressed his displeasure at the slow progress of the work and asked the contractor to finish it in two months.

At Nagashettihalli, the Mayor found that over 60 families who had been living in Manjunath Layout for more than 50 years had no possession certificates (khatas). He directed Mr. Parshwanath to take steps to issue khatas.

Under the BMP's "18 per cent grants" programme for weaker sections, Mr. Ramesh sanctioned Rs. 2.5 lakh to build a community hall and library at Nagashettihalli. The Mayor directed the officials to build bus shelters near the Ayyappa Temple on HMT Main Road and at Nagashettihalli.
