ESPN-Star Sports bags Asia Cup rights

MUMBAI, JUNE 16. Asian Cricket Council (ACC) awarded the world telecast rights for Asia Cup 2004 to ESPN-Star Sports, inclusive of radio broadcast and on-ground sponsorship, according to a media release on Wednesday. The July 16-August 2 tournament will feature India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, UAE and Hong Kong.

According to R.C. Venkatesh, MD, ESPN Software India Pvt. Ltd., the fact that nine out of 13 matches will be played under floodlights will add to the excitement for the fans.

Syed Ashraful Haq, CEO of ACC, said: "We are extremely pleased to announce our partnership with ESPN-Star Sports for the upcoming Asian Cup."

Manu Sawhney, the channel's Sr. VP, Programming and Event Management, said: "Securing the rights for the Asia Cup is an affirmation of our commitment to Asian cricket. We believe in Asian cricket and see a strong future for it. There are already several Asian cricket powerhouses and the others are coming into their own." — Our Special Correspondent
