Visakhapatnam

VISAKHAPATNAM, JUNE 16. Attempts by the local unit of the Indian National Trust for Arts, Culture and Heritage (INTACH) to drum up support for the construction of a replica of the Round Building came under fire from the former director of the Mumbai-based Urban Design Research Institute (UDRI), Preeti Sanghi. Ms. Sanghi and a lecturer in the Department of Architecture of Andhra University, Shabnam Patel, said in a joint statement here on Tuesday that INTACH's decision to build a replica of the structure, if it were handed over the site, was not justified. They said architects felt strongly that building an imitation would not serve the purpose of keeping the demolition of Round Building, which they called a "tragic happening" in public memory. "We need to learn from this incident and make sure this does not reoccur by accelerating the processes of policy formulation and Heritage Regulations in Visakhapatnam," they said.
