MADURAI, JUNE 16. Non-governmental organisations should promote rural micro-enterprises, playing the role of a catalyst and using transfer technology among members of self-help groups, M. Lakshmanan, former Vice-Chancellor of the Madurai Kamaraj University, has said. Presiding over the valedictory of the six-day trainers programme to NGO professionals on income generating projects, held under the joint aegis of the Centre for Entrepreneurship Development (Tamil Nadu), the Development Promotion Group and the Tamil Nadu Corporation for Development of Women here recently, Dr. Lakshmanan said NGOs should provide a link to rural poor women with economic development so that they could also reap the benefits. In his address, S. Kuberanarayanan, Project Officer, Mahalir Thittam, assured all possible support to strengthen the NGO movement for the development of SHGs. R. Jayaraman, member-secretary of CED, said business opportunity guidance, identification of appropriate technology and training, credit linkage and marketing network were the four factors responsible for the success of women micro-enterprises in rural areas. The aim of the programme was to incorporate these components and facilitate economic development activities in rural areas. Joel SGR Bhose, senior consultant, CED, said the programme was organised to train the NGO professionals as accredited trainers to conduct EDP for women and rural youth for economic development activities and it was structured as a capacity building exercise. C. Manoharan, project officer, CED, proposed a vote of thanks.
