Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, JUNE 17. Lawyers went on strike and observed a fast seeking revocation of cases filed against two of their colleagues. Health department employees are protesting against doctors from private hospitals manning primary health centres; parents staged a dharna protesting against the management running kindergarten classes on the third floor of a school and employees of a municipality observed a token fast in support of their charter of demands. This has been the picture in Pondicherry for the past few days. In addition to this, a bizarre situation was witnessed when volunteers of a political party staged a demonstration near a private school protesting the modalities of admission. The agitators sought the Administration's intervention to restrain the managements of private schools from collecting hefty donations. The party also protested the managements' refusal of seats to some children beyond the Matriculation or SSLC class. Getting admission to courses beyond X standard for the students has become a challenge these days. Despite Pondicherry having several schools, the demand for seats, particularly in the post matriculation courses, has been on the increase. There should be arrangements to have Plus-Two courses exclusively on separate premises and a combined processing of applications could be done for admission. Presently the schools have to run higher secondary classes on the same premises where the high school courses are also held find.
