Kurnool
By Our Staff Reporter
KURNOOL, JUNE 17. The Kurnool MP, K. Jayasuryaprakasa Reddy, has said a Rs. 50-crore drinking water scheme was on the anvil for villages in Kodumur, Gudur, Devanakonda, Krishnagiri and Dhone mandals. The scheme, sponsored by the Union Ministry of Rural Development, would use the Sunkesula reservoir across the Tungabhadra as the source, he said. Mr. Reddy told The Hindu that villages in the upland mandals suffered from an acute shortage of drinking water during the summer months. Scores of villages would benefit from the scheme, he said He said he would request the South Central Railway to start an inter-city express, `Nandini,' between Kurnool and Secunderabad. The Railways had proposed starting the express long ago, but the scheme had not materialised due to "a lack of initiative." The train, he said, would be convenient for commuters starting from Kurnool in the early hours. There was scope for running long-distance trains via Kurnool if the signals were modernised, he said, adding that the Railway Ministry would be requested to start an express between Hyderabad and Chennai via Kurnool. He also said a proposal for modernising the signalling system between Hyderabad and Gooty would be proposed, adding that the project would cost Rs. 200 crores. He would mobilise signatures from MPs from Hyderabad to Gooty for the improvement of rail transport in the area, he said. He also promised to take up the improvement of railway stations and bridges between Kurnool and Gooty with the Railway Ministry. The drinking water problem and allocation of funds of MPLADS in rural areas would be a priority. Rs. 10 lakhs would be given to a school at Laddagiri for the purchase of computers. A rural stadium would be constructed in the village, he said. Mr. Reddy said Amakatadu, the birthplace of his late father, would be named Vijayabhaskar Reddy Nagar, and the Kotla Vijayabhaskar Reddy memorial would be opened in August. The MP said he would hold discussions with the Collector and irrigation officials for finding ways to ensure water to tail-end areas under the Tunghabhadra Low Level Canal. Steps would also be taken to speed up the work of the Summer Storage Tank to help residents of Kurnool and farmers under the Gajuladinne project, as water was supplied to the city at the cost of farmers, he said.
