Uttar Pradesh
LUCKNOW, JUNE 17. Most parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh received heavy rainfall today, the second day after arrival of the monsoon. The South-West monsoon was termed ``vigorous'' by the metereological department as most of the eastern parts of the State received four times more rainfall than expected. Though the capital, Lucknow, received moderate rainfall, reports of waterlogging were received from several areas including the posh Hazratganj and Charbagh resulting in a heavy traffic jam. ``If the rainfall is as per the usual limit it is considered normal, more than that it becomes an active monsoon and when it rains four times more than expected it is what we call a vigorous monsoon,'' according to the Met office director, R.K. Verma. The `vigorous' monsoon was attributed to the low pressure area developing over south-west Uttar Pradesh with the moisture feeding from both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. Besides, pre-monsoonic activities had already started well in the western parts of the State and monsoon showers were expected any time. During the past 24 hours almost all places in eastern Uttar Pradesh received rainfall above three cm. According to details available Bansi (in Basti district) received very heavy rainfall at 124.6 mm, Gorakhpur recorded 132.3 mm, Turtipar (in Ballia) received 98 mm, Allahabad 50 mm, Kanpur 55.6 mm, Rigoli (in Gorakhpur) 55.3 mm, Khadda (in Deoria district) 54.6 mm, Sultanpur 45.8 mm and Lucknow 52.2 mm. The maximum temperature Lucknow was recorded at 27.6 degree Celsius which was 11 degree below normal. Reports from Basti said the rail and road communication to Kanpur, Unnao and Lucknow was disrupted due to heavy rains in the area since the last three days. The Met office said the monsoon despite arriving two days early was till now evenly distributed and the rains were heavy. ``But the activity is expected to slow down after tomorrow as another pressure system is developing from the Bay of Bengal because of which the rains are expected to become moderate in the next few days." Meanwhile, heavy-to-very heavy rainfall/thundershowers are likely in almost all parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh during the next 48 hours while humidity would remain cent per cent. The Met office said on an average, Lucknow receives a total of 89 cm rainfall in one monsoon season which is considered normal while in the entire state 80 cm is the normal limit. --UNI
