Bachchans own 13 cars, Anil Ambani none

LUCKNOW, JUNE 17. Most of the candidates in fray for the 11 Rajya Sabha seats from Uttar Pradesh are multi-millionares, yet many of them do not own a single vehicle, according to their affidavits.

If the vice-chairman of Reliance industries and Chairman, Reliance Energy, Anil D Ambani, makes it to the House of Elders as an independent supported by the SP, he would perhaps be the richest MP. But interestingly, neither he nor his yesteryear actress wife, Tina Ambani, owns a vehicle.

Similarly, Bahujan Samaj Party president and former state Chief Minister, Mayawati, who is also contesting the RS polls, does not own a vehicle. Provided with a `Z' plus security and protected by NSG commandos, she moves in a bullet-proof Ambassador.

Noted scribe and former Union Minister, Arun Shourie (BJP) is another RS seat candidate who does not own a vehicle.

However, actress and Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate Jaya Bachchan and her husband, mega star Amitabh Bachchan, own 13 top-of-the-line four-wheelers.

Ms. Bachchan, who heads the State Film Development Council, has a Toyota Qualis, a Toyota Lexus and a Mitshubishi Lancer, their total cost coming to Rs 40 lakh.

Mr. Bachchan owns a Toyota Land Cruiser, a DCM Toyota, a Mercedes Benz E240, a Benz SL 500, a BMW 760 LI (right-hand drive), another BMW X5, a Scorpio, a Gypsy King and a Santro. His vehicles are worth Rs 3.25 crore.

Former Union Minister and BJP leader, Murli Manohar Joshi owns two jeeps and a 1990 model Premier 118 NE car. His affidavit claims that the jeeps are in disposable condition. The Joshi family also owns a 1974 model Ambassador car. --UNI
