Sports Ministry's grant for Vivek Singh
NEW DELHI: The Union Sports Ministry on Friday announced a financial help of Rs. 2 lakhs to former Indian hockey player Vivek Singh, who is battling cancer.
``The Sports Ministry has decided to give a lumpsum amount of Rs. 2 lakhs to Vivek Singh from the National Welfare Fund for Sportspersons,'' an official of the Sports Ministry said here.
The Ministry's assistance comes close on the heels of the IHF's decision to give Rs. 1 lakh to the 37-year-old Olympian, who returned home in Varanasi on Friday after consulting specialists at the Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital in Mumbai.
Vivek, an office superintendent with the North Eastern Railways, was first diagnosed and treated for urinary bladder cancer in 2000. But doctors last year detected that the cancer had spread to other parts of his body including the lungs. PTI
