KRISHNAGIRI, JUNE 18 . To make up for the lack of employment created by the acute drought conditions prevalent in the district, it has been decided to take up drought relief works at Rs. 5.65 crores under the Food For Work programme, the Collector, Mangat Ram Sharma, has said. Around 10,000 tonnes of rice worth Rs.1.88 crores had been allocated for the programme covering all the 337 village panchayats in the district, he said. Mr. Mangat Ram Sharma said that registration for labour was open in all the respective panchayats and works at Rs. 1 lakh would be taken up in every panchayat. Employment would be offered to those who have registered, and as per the scheme would be provided with seven kgs of rice at Rs. 5.65 per kg and Rs. 14.45 in cash, totally amounting to Rs. 54. This would create 14.25-lakh mandays in all the village panchayats, he pointed out. He said that 1,047 works would be taken up in all the village panchayats with focus on creating new water sources like irrigation tanks, village ponds, percolation and sunkan ponds and desilting of canals and major tanks. Of the total works, the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) would take up 868 works, the Forest Department and the PWD would take up 68 and 47 works respectively. Along with this, the Department of Agricultural Engineering and Horticulture have also planned to take up 54 and 5 works respectively, he added.
