SHIMOGA, JUNE 18. The Deputy Director of Public Instruction, G. Basavannappa, said here on Friday that people should conserve rainwater in view of the importance of water for domestic and industrial use.

Inaugurating a seminar on "Rainwater Harvesting" organised by the Swadesh Jagrut Seva Datti, the Department of Public Instruction, the Adichunchanagiri Educational Society, the Rotary Central Club and the Vasavi Shikshan Samsthe, he said it was distressing to note that greedy human beings were overexploiting natural resources for their personal gains.

He said the wanton destruction of forests and other natural resources led to the fast depletion of underground water sources causing severe drought conditions. He suggested that rainwater could be stored and used during the lean period by adopting the soak pit method, which also helped enrich underground water sources. He stressed the need for maintaining purity while conserving terrace water.

He said people should avoid misusing water, which was becoming scarce in view of the scanty rainfall. Mr. Basavannappa emphasised the need for involving actively students in rainwater harvesting.

Prasannanath Swamiji of the local branch of the Adichunchanagiri Math said the water level in the wells and other water sources could improve with the effective implementation of rainwater harvesting method.

He said it was necessary for all to voluntarily conserve rainwater for the benefit of posterity. The swamiji appealed to the people to engage themselves in tree planting to ensure adequate rainfall.

R.C. Anand and Sripathi participated in the seminar as resource persons.

The Secretary of the Vasavi Shikshan Samsthe, S.K. Seshachala, welcomed the gathering.
